“I’ll stand by you”

imageOn Saturday a spiritual strongman wrote ‘A spirit of despair came to me during the night. I wrestled and overcame it.’

Yesterday morning at church one of our pastors felt ‘even though the sun is shining, some of you feel dull, the dullness of despair.’

These quotes sum up the past few weeks for me. Maybe for you too?

But in the early hours of yesterday morning, I heard the gentlest whisper

“I’ll stand by you”.

I knew this was the title of a song. I could hear these four words being sung. But I couldn’t remember anymore.

A Google search reminded me not only of all the lyrics but also of the beauty and depth of His love.

I could hear His voice in the words of the song.

Don’t be ashamed to cry, let me see you through
We don’t have to feel embarrassed, weak or guilty, when things feel tough. Nor do we have to feel it’s wrong to pour out our feelings before Him. Over one third of the Psalms are written that way. When we feel helpless, He is there to help us in whatever it is we are going through. He will help us out. He won’t leave us there. His response to the cries of our heart is a gentle ‘let me see you through’.

Nothing you confess, could make me love you less
I love how these words convey the depth of the Father’s unfailing love, His total forgiveness, boundless mercy, amazing grace, and eternal hope. They declare the freedom we have to come before Him and tell him everything without fear of any condemnation or rejection.

Don’t hold it all inside, come and talk to me now
How often when we need to reach out to Him, do we feel He is out of reach. This line paints a beautiful picture of our Father reaching out to us!! Beckoning, inviting, longing for us to draw close, to feel the safety of His embrace. We don’t have to hold it all together. We just have to allow Him to hold us. And hold nothing back from Him. Tell Him everything. There is nothing we can’t talk to Him about.

Take me in, into your darkest hour, and I’ll never desert you, I’ll stand by you”
Sometimes in our darkest hours we feel a failure, unworthy of His love and unable to see a way across the huge distance between where we are and where we long to be. But the Cross has bridged that gap. Not only can we approach Him with confidence but we can invite Him in. Into the very parts of our heart we let no one else into. We don’t need to fear misunderstanding, criticism or abandonment. “I will never leave you or forsake you”.

And when… you’re feeling all alone, you won’t be on your own”
Our personal battle can cause isolation. Too ashamed to take off the mask or too afraid of rejection, it can be a lonely journey. But YOU ARE NOT ALONE. “God is there every time” Ps 34:19 MSG. And many others are going through similar experiences and worse struggles too. It is not just you. You don’t have to go it alone.

A friend recently sent me a card with these beautiful words:

In difficult times,
Prayer is not us reaching way up to God and him reaching down.
It’s God sitting right next to us,
Putting His strong arm round us,
Listening intently to every word,
And holding us like He’ll never let us go,

His love for you declares “I’ll stand by you”.
