I’m in love with you

imageJust before Christmas Andy and I celebrated 36 years since we first started going out. It did take another 7 years before we got married following a few ‘commercial breaks’ (!) and a couple of times when we were apart because I was working in Canada and Spain.

That was long before the days of mobile phones, emails, texts, FaceTime etc. We had to rely on good old snail mail to stay in touch!! How I loved getting a letter in the post. The joy when it arrived and the disappointment if the postman passed by!

Since then I’ve so appreciated the more instant joy of texts and FaceTime when Andy or I have been away travelling. It’s made the distance so much easier.

Recently, I felt the Lord remind me how much I loved and still love ‘communication’ whether by text or email or letter or face to face.

He also wanted to remind me how much He loves to communicate with me.

It may be through His written word or His Holy Spirit, or through books and quotations and the words of others. There are numerous ways the Father communicates with His children.

I have a book by Larry Crabb which talks about the books of the Bible as “66 Love Letters“. He writes about each book, answering the question “What does God want me to hear from this love letter?

Imagine if I had been waiting and waiting for a letter from Andy and when it arrived, I hadn’t bothered to open it. Do you think I would have put it away without opening it and looking at the contents? No way!!!!!

I couldn’t wait to open it!! I read it and read it again then re-read it several times to keep me going until the next one arrived!!

The Father’s Love Letters are always waiting for us to pick them up.

Father, forgive us for the many times we have ignored your love letters to us and not taken time to open them and read and reread them.

Thank you Lord your love for each of us is so strong and so unique. Father as we open these beautiful love letters, I pray we would see your love revealed in every line and in every word, and in response we would fall more and more in love with you and long to know you even more.

Love letters are great but face to face time is even better. I’m so grateful to be able to communicate more easily with Andy now if we are apart through travelling but nothing beats seeing him again and getting to spend time with him, chatting face to face.

In Exodus 33:11 we read “The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.”

One of my current favourite songs is “A little longer” by Bethel Music. In the song the question is posed “What can I do for You, Beautiful King?” And the Lord’s response is truly beautiful.

Then I hear You say
You don’t have to do a thing
Simply be with me and
Let those things go
They can wait another minute
Wait this moment is too sweet
Please stay here with me
And love on Me a little longer
‘Cause I’m in love with you

We were created for relationship. May this be a year when we respond to his invitation to discover and learn, through His Love Letters and time spent with Him, the depth of His words, I’m in love with you“.

PS  I still have all Andy’s letters to me ♥️

Happy New Year?

imageOr maybe today doesn’t feel too happy? The decorations are down, the celebrations are over, alarm clocks are set again, it’s back to work, back to school and today’s grey skies and constant rain did not help!!

As a friend texted me “My mood at the moment is perfectly mirrored by the weather.”

I’m sure they are not alone.

Exactly a month ago I read in Nicky Gumbel’s excellent Bible in One Year App:

“As we believe in the sun even when it is not shining, so we continue to believe in God’s love even in times of darkness when we don’t feel His love.

This is a sign of Christian maturity: when we continue to believe in God’s love even in times of darkness when we don’t feel His love.”

At a time when we are being told to give up … chocolate, spending, etc etc, don’t be tempted to feel it’s time to give up on God.

I’ve quoted this verse from Psalm 65:11 before but it has helped me on many a day like this.

“You crown the year with a bountiful harvest.
Even the hard pathways overflow with abundance.”

As Van the Man Morrison sings
“When it’s not always raining, there will be days like this”

Days to say YES to His promises and NO to our circumstances

Days to see the ABUNDANCE of His faithfulness and favour

Days to DREAM BIG rather than settle for less

Days to EMBRACE the NEW and days to say FAREWELL to the OLD

No matter how today feels, there WILL be days like these.

“We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed.
We are perplexed, but not driven to despair.
We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God.
We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.”
2 Corinthians 4:8-9 NLT

As v16 says ‘Don’t lose heart’.

Keep leaning into His love.

Keep moving forward in His mercy.

Keep focused on His faithfulness.

Keep holding on to His hope.

And keep going and growing in His grace.
